LEARNING IN COMP. SCIENCE & MATHS USING CROSS DISCIPLINARY PROJECTS

ENHANCING LEARNING IN COMPUTER SCIENCE & MATHEMATICS USING CROSS DISCIPLINARY PROJECTS (K-12/HE)

Exploring the Synergy: Mathematics and Computer Science is a dynamic course that breaks down the barriers between these two disciplines and explores the fascinating connections they share. In this course, we aim to ignite curiosity by using mathematical problems to inspire an interest in computer science, and vice versa. We will also draw inspiration from history and the arts to showcase the beautiful interplay of these subjects.

By delving into captivating problem-solving scenarios, we will cover a range of topics:

1. Complex Numbers & the Mandelbrot Set: Discover how complex numbers can be applied in computer science through captivating exercises involving the famous Mandelbrot Set.
2. Recurrence Relations & The Towers of Hanoi: Uncover the power of recurrence relations in solving intriguing puzzles like The Towers of Hanoi, while simultaneously exploring their relevance in computer science.
3. Loops, Recursion & The Sum of the Natural Numbers: Gain insights into loops and recursion as we explore captivating problems centered around the sum of natural numbers.
4. Truth Tables & The Island of Knights & Knaves: Dive into logic puzzles featuring truth tables and learn how they intertwine with both mathematics and computer science.
5. Iteration, Fibonacci & The Golden Ratio: Explore ancient mathematical concepts such as iteration, Fibonacci sequences, and the Golden Ratio, witnessing their practical applications.

Each section comes complete with practice sheets and illustrative examples that can be easily integrated into your classroom teaching.

While a basic understanding of programming can be helpful during the course, it is not essential for participation.

Upon completing this transformative course offered by the University of Wolverhampton, teachers specializing in Computer Science and/or Mathematics at Second Level, High School, Further Education, or Higher Education will emerge equipped with valuable knowledge to foster more interconnected learning experiences for their students. Join us on this enlightening journey as we bridge gaps between disciplines and spark a deeper passion for Mathematics and Computer Science!
